Information The farm: Vishuddha is an organic farm, lying in the centre of Portugal which has been a Wwoof host since 1990. It is a property of 16 acres, made up of 250 fig trees, 150 olive trees and about 40 fruit trees (oranges, peaches, lemons, almonds, etc.). We also have a greenhouse and a vegetable garden which produce various vegetables for the house. Type of work: The work on the farm is very varied, changing throughout the year according to the season. Thus the times of year when labour is very important are during the months of July and August, in the fig season, which involves clearing the space around the trees and afterwards, picking the figs. In a normal year the harvest would amount to 3 to 4 tons of figs. Another important time of year is during the months of October and November, the olive season; the crop can yield up to 2 tons of olives. During the rest of the year, Woofers’ help is also very important in caring for the land, maintenance such as tree-pruning, etc. and also for looking after the greenhouse and vegetable garden.
How it is here for Woofers: We are looking for flexible, friendly helpers/Woofers, who will enjoy being part of what is happening here, regardless of their age and experience. Normally Woofers are expected to put in 5 or 6 hours work a day, with one day a week off, as suggested in the Woof guidelines. Woofers have their own small house, separate from the family home, so that they can have a place to relax and enjoy their free time in privacy. Main meals, however, are served our house. The surrounding countryside is lovely for those who enjoy walking and we have a swimming pool, where Woofers can cool off in the summer months. Woofers stay from two weeks to six months or more, though preference is given to woofers who intend a longer stay, to give more continuity to the work done and to encourage a closer working relationship. It may be encouraging to note that over the last 15 years, about 200 woofers have stayed at Vishuddha.
Griffith Family: A typically English/Welsh family, with 7 members, although only 5 still live on or near the farm (the oldest now work in London), which has been living in Portugal for 20 years. It’s a friendly family, well integrated in the local community; we try to give an idea of Portuguese culture to those who come in from abroad. The family is involved with classical music, which provides the main source of income, whether through piano lessons (in the music school based at the farm) or through the activities of Coral Sinfónico de Portugal. Throughout the year, singers come from all over the country to be trained to take part in a major choral work. At the end, they are joined by a professional orchestra to produce a concert of outstanding quality. Periodically we run workshops, usually connected with music. |
